Range and Habitat

Ruffed grouse habitat is restricted to the Black Hills region of western South Dakota. Ruffed grouse are a product of the woodlands, preferring clearings, burns or clear cuts to mature stands of timber. Favorite “pockets” for Black Hills ruffed grouse include stands of aspen and fringe areas of mountain meadows.
