PIERRE, S.D. – Animal enthusiasts are entertained and entranced by the variety of creatures they can visit at the Great Plains Zoo located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The 45-acre park is an explorer’s dream offering up-close encounters with animals that are not typically found in larger zoos. The collection contains over 1,000 animals from all over the world, including giraffes, tigers, rhinos, primates, and exhibits of Asian cats and rare rhinos.

Great Plains Zoo, which is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos, is home to the Delbridge Museum of Natural History, which is a collection of 150 mounted animals. Of these, 36 are considered “vanishing species.” The Savannah Express is a guided tour narrated by a train conductor offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse of life at the zoo. The Great Plains Zoo is also home to Sanford Carousel, a custom-designed ride featuring a variety of zoo animals and Zootopia, the one site gift shop.

Events and fundraisers are held at the zoo throughout the year; watch their website for a schedule of events. The Zoo offers special educational programs for area school children, including camps, classes, a mobile zoo that brings animals to you, and field trip opportunities.

The Great Plains Zoo is a facility dedicated to education, conservation, recreation and discovery. South Dakota visitors and residents alike will enjoy the opportunity to experience wildlife up close.

The Zoo is open year around with hours varying depending on the season. Through September, the Zoo is open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., and October through March from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information regarding hours, admissions and directions visit http://www.gpzoo.org/Visit/GeneralInformation.
