South Dakota’s Great Places: Lewis & Clark Recreation Area

PIERRE, S.D. – Are you looking for a camping experience with something for everyone? Discover the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area, one of South Dakota’s Great Places.

Located in south eastern part of the South Dakota, six miles west of Yankton, the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area is the second most visited campground in the state. With a vast variety of things to do and see at the location, it’s easy to understand why visitors and locals alike enjoy the area.

The recreation area is positioned on the shores of the25-mile Lewis and Clark Lake, which is created by Gavins Point Dam and is one of the four large reservoirs on the Missouri River.

The lake provides water recreation enthusiasts a variety of fun activities, such as swimming, sailing, water-skiing, fishing, boating and wind surfing. For those more inclined to stay on dry land, the recreation area also boasts miles of trails for hiking and biking. Other activities include disc golf, horseshoes, volleyball and soccer. Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy the variety of birds and other animals available for observations. With picnic facilities and weekend programs, there is never a dull moment at the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area.

There is plenty of room to stay at the recreational area. A variety of accommodations are available including 409 paved campsites, 17 rustic camping cabins and 24 motel rooms, offering something for everyone at the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area.
