FORT PIERRE, S.D. – The Verendrye Museum of Fort Pierre is pleased to announce the authorization of the Historic Bad River Trail: Scotty Philip Memorial Ride in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the death of Scotty Philip.

Building on the success of the recent Casey Tibbs Memorial Ride and the Fort Pierre to Deadwood trail ride, this event will be a memorial to Scotty Philip, who known to be the man who saved the buffalo from extinction.

The trail riders will assemble on Saturday, July 16th in Philip, South Dakota (the town was named after Scotty Philip) and will proceed for seven days along the Bad River, arriving in Fort Pierre on Saturday, July 23rd.

The ride will transit across approximately 90 miles of Bad River bottoms and breaks, crossing beautiful prairie and river bottoms. Highlights will include crossing Ted Turner’s ranch, home to one of the largest buffalo herds in the world.

As was the policy for previous Verendrye Museum trail rides, no motorized vehicles are allowed on the trail. Instead, please bring your buggy, wagon, stagecoach, horse, mule, donkey or just your walking boots.

The public is invited to observe the trail riders during the day and attend the evening encampments. Evening events will include historic lectures, cowboy stories, and music. There is no charge for visitors. Visit the Fort Pierre website for encampment locations, www.fortpierre.com.

The Historic Bad River Trail: Scotty Philip Memorial Trail ride is limited to 300 participants. The cost is $250 per adult, $150 for youth under 12. Admission fee includes the wagon master led trail ride, water for livestock on the trail, portable restrooms, evening entertainment and historic speeches, participation in the arrival parade, a free evening meal upon arrival in Fort Pierre, free overnight parking area at the fairgrounds on Saturday night, and entry into the Friday night dance in historic downtown Fort Pierre.
