MOBRIDGE, SD - The Mobridge Area Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee has been busy planning their 9th Annual Ice fishing Tournament to be held January 9, 2010. Surprisingly to the committee, entries have been flooding into the chamber office since the tournament opened for entries on October 1.
“I am absolutely amazed by the response we have gotten from our tournament anglers this year,” stated Jesse Konold, Mobridge Chamber President. “As of now, we have 326 2-person teams registered, and it looks like we will have a full field of 400 teams by next week, if we keep pace.”
The success of the annual event is very apparent. The tournament started in 2001 as a one person ice fishing tournament. That year they had 50 individual entries, followed by 50 teams in 2002. Last year the tournament had a field of 397 teams that tried their luck at over $75,000 in cash and prizes. For the 2010 tournament the committee has accumulated over $90,000 in cash and prizes.
Rick Bolduan, tourism committee co-chair, chuckled and said, “Our big prize the first year was a Mr. Heater, now we are at $90,000 worth of stuff…it’s amazing.” Bolduan went on to say, “If it wasn’t for our committee, volunteers, the business sector and citizens of Mobridge, and our sponsors, we would not be able to put on an event of this size.”
Not only is it a great tournament in which to participate, but it also has a great economic impact on the Mobridge area during a time that most communities are sleepy towns. Anglers from 12 states and Canada have registered for the 2010 tournament, which will allow Mobridge to showcase their restaurants, lodging providers and local establishments.
“We always get great comments from our anglers about the people in Mobridge, and South Dakota in general, and it is our people that keep bringing in these anglers to our city and state,” continued Konold.
