This hour long educational excavation is great for “Junior Paleontologists” ages 4-13 years. During this simulated dig, children learn Paleontological excavation techniques, including identification of replica mammoth and giant short-faced bear fossils. Replicas are buried in a special area next to the actual sinkhole. Please dress in appropriate clothing, as participants will get dirty. A parent or guardian must stay at the Mammoth Site during the program and seating is available at the dig site. Photos and filming is encouraged. Participants bring home a certificate of completion and a fossil identification booklet.
Regular Site admission is not included in the Junior Paleontologist Excavation fee. We require participants and family members to arrive at least 1 hour prior to the dig in order to participate in the 30 minute guided tour. The tour tells the Site’s history, how the fossils are excavated and preserved.
