BROOKINGS, S.D. - An art exhibit featuring the works of Jim Pollock, Pierre
and Steve Randall, Sioux Falls will be on display at the Brookings
Community Cultural Center May 7-29, 2009. On Friday, May 15,
5:30-7:30 p.m. the public is invited to an artists reception and
gallery talk. At 6:00 p.m. Jim and Steve will talk about their
current work and give a presentation about the U.S. Army Vietnam
Combat Art Program and their experiences as soldier artists during
the Vietnam War.
Pollock and Randall each have over 40 original paintings and drawings
on display. Pollock says, "All of our original art in this exhibit
were done on location (or in plein air)."
Most of the works in the exhibit are landscapes that depict diverse
South Dakota locations like Pierre, Brookings, Little Moreau,
Pollock, Sylvan Lake, Sioux Falls, Yankton, The Badlands as well as
many other South Dakota locations.
In addition to the original plein air work Steve and Jim are
currently doing, there will be a display of prints of their Vietnam
era work completed while serving on U. S. Army Vietnam Combat Art
Teams during the Vietnam War.
The Vietnam era components of this exhibit were compiled and are on
loan from the Museum of the South Dakota Historical Society in
Pierre. These prints were first put on display in 2006 during the
Vietnam Memorial dedication in Pierre. The originals for the Vietnam
era war art are in the permanent U.S. Army War Art collection in
Washington, D.C.
