Sioux Falls Fusion Debuts at April 7 Concert

The Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society has commissioned a composition for the All City Middle School Jazz Ensemble concert, April 7that Augustana College.
 
The composition, Sioux Falls Fusion, is a piece that has been commissioned for this year’s All City Jazz Ensemble by Grammy award winner Doug Beach. Beach’s career includes trumpet performance, teaching, adjudicating, publishing and composing. Mr. Beach will perform as a special guest with the ensemble.
 
Dr. Paul Schilf, Augustana’s assistant professor of music, assisted in getting Beach involved in the project. Schilf adds “It will be a fantastic experience for the students of the All-City Middle School Jazz program to work with a world-class musician and composer such as Doug Beach.”
 
Nineteen students from the Sioux Falls middle schools will come together to create the Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society’s All City Middle School Jazz Ensemble on April 7that Kresge Recital Hall on the campus of Augustana College. The Ensemble, along with Augustana’s Northlanders Jazz Band, will perform the free concert.
 
“We were thrilled when we received the call that Mr. Beach would commission a piece just for the Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society and these young performers,” said Robert Joyce, Executive Director of the Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society. Joyce added “This is just another great dimension of what the Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society is able to provide as unique opportunities for young musicians in our community and region.”
 
Mr. Mark Isackson will conduct the All City Middle School Jazz Ensemble. Isackson is particularly excited to be rehearsing and conducting the first group of musicians to play the piece Sioux Falls Fusion. “I am incredibly honored my name is on the commission along with Dr. Schilf and the students of the ensemble,” Isackson said.
 
The All City Jazz Ensemble is funded through the Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society. The Society’s Educational Fund provides supplemental music education opportunities to the youth in the Sioux Falls community.
 
The All City Jazz Ensemble is sponsored by the Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society, Mr. Kealey’s Opus Fund, Augustana College, Sioux Falls Public Schools, K&M Music and Yamaha.
 
The Michael Miller Scholarship will be awarded to two middle school ensemble participants; this scholarship allows students to further their musical studies with funding for private lessons or band camp.
It is the mission of the Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society to increase the awareness of jazz and blues music in the Sioux Falls community through musical events and education.
