HOT SPRINGS, S.D. - The Mammoth Site is working with Project Exploration to create an interdisciplinary three and one-half day paleontology and geology field experience in the southern Black Hills.
Project Exploration is a non-profit science education organization in Chicago dedicated to making science accessible to the public—especially minority youth and girls—through personalized experiences with science and scientists.
Each year Project Exploration selects 12 Chicago Public high school students to serve as Junior Paleontologists, studying geology, paleontology and anatomy for three weeks in the summer. After spending two weeks in Chicago, students travel to the American west to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom alongside scientists in the field.
For the past three years, Project Exploration’s Junior Paleontologists have traveled to Hot Springs, South Dakota to work with The Mammoth Site.
Below are comments from Kristin Atman, Director of Programs, with Project Exploration in regards to the 2007 Project Exploration experience at The Mammoth Site.
"Project Exploration’s students and staff spent a week discovering fossils, working alongside scientists, and exploring the field of paleontology firsthand. From excavation and fossil preparation to molding and casting – the educational programs at the Mammoth Site offer a unique insight into all areas of paleontology in an exciting and engaging way. The hands-on, interactive activities combined with knowledgeable and friendly staff created a meaningful and memorable experience for all of our students. Project Exploration is very excited to work with the Mammoth Site and provide such a comprehensive, in-depth science experience for our students!

The new laboratory is open for viewing by the visiting public from 8 – 8 with the last tour leaving at 7:00 p.m. Visitors can see into the laboratory and view the work being conducted therein.
