PIERRE, S.D. – Stop in for some finger-lickin’ fun during the 2nd annual South Dakota State Barbeque Championship at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds in Huron, June 6-7.
“Having the first-ever championships under our belt, we are planning for a great 2008 championship,” said Candi Hettinger, marketing/events coordinator for the South Dakota State Fairgrounds. “At least 25 teams from nine states will compete for the title of Grand Champion at our event.”
The South Dakota State Barbeque Championship is a Kansas City BBQ Society sanctioned event. The Grand Champion at the South Dakota event will earn the right to compete at the Great American Barbeque in Kansas City, Kan., the 29th annual American Royal in Kansas City, Mo., and the 20th annual Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational in Lynchburg, Tenn.
A chili cook-off is scheduled for Friday night, June 6 and to further involve the public, a people’s choice competition is scheduled for Saturday, June 7. Featured in this year’s competition is lamb donated by the American Lamb Board, pork donated by the SD Pork Producers and turkey donated by Dakota Provisions.
The people’s choice competition is free to all men and women in uniform as a way of saying thank you, said Hettinger. This includes all military men and women and law enforcement officers.
“Last year, over 600 people turned out in the pouring rain to get a taste of BBQ,” said Hettinger. “We expect to double that number this year.”
