Minuteman Missile National Historic Site is pleased to announce the first ever night program at Launch Facility (missile silo) Delta-09. Visitors attending the program will have the unique opportunity to visit the missile silo just after sundown on Thursday, June 12.
The program will begin at The National Grasslands Visitor Center in Wall at 8:00 p.m. The Grasslands Visitor Center will open its doors at 7:30 p.m. to allow visitors to view exhibits and displays inside. Visitors will first attend a short interpretive presentation by Park Ranger Chris Wilkinson entitled "Minuteman Missile: Preserving A Legacy of the Cold War." This presentation will cover Minuteman Missiles in South Dakota and their role as a deterrent during the Cold War. The visitors will also view the park’s just completed film.
From the National Grasslands visitor center tour participants will then follow Ranger Wilkinson by car caravan six miles east to Launch Facility (missile silo) Delta-09. The missile silo is a half mile south of exit 116, Interstate 90. Visitors will view a Minuteman II training missile on display. They will also learn how the missile would be launched and the devastating power of nuclear weapons. Please dress according to the weather, nights can be chilly in June and thunderstorms may suddenly arise. Bring a flashlight. Car pooling is recommended because of narrow and limited parking at the site.
Tours are also available at Minuteman Missile National Historic Site at the two facilities which make up the site - Launch Control Facility, Delta -01 and Launch Facility Delta-09. Tours are given daily year round. Tour spaces are extremely limited, it is best to make reservations in advance. For more information about tours at the site please visit their website at
