PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Office of Tourism has once again received national recognition for excellence in tourism marketing.
With the most recent award, the tourism office is being recognized for its website,, which has been selected as the 2007 W3 Silver Award Winner in the tourism category. This is the third award given to the South Dakota Office of Tourism this year for excellence in tourism marketing.
The W3 Award honors creative excellence on the Web, and specifically recognizes the creative and marketing professionals behind award winning sites, marketing programs and video work created for the Internet.
“It’s really not about web design or winning awards,” said Billie Jo Waara, director, South Dakota Office of Tourism. “It’s about making information available so people looking to visit South Dakota have everything they need when making their travel plans.”
The timing of the award is fitting as the South Dakota Tourism web site was recently updated to add new tools and features. With the addition of a trip planner and an interactive tour guide, the goal was to increase usability for visitors using the web site.
The website was developed in conjunction with the South Dakota Office of Tourism and its marketing agency, Lawrence & Schiller.
The efforts of the Office of Tourism are part of Goal 1 of the 2010 initiative to double visitor spending in South Dakota. The Office of Tourism serves under the direction of Richard Benda, Secretary of the Department of Tourism and State Development.
