Festival: A Fixture in Downtown Events

Sioux Falls, SD (8/20/07) –Summer is drawing to a close and that means it’s time once again for one of the area’s longest running festivals. The44th Annual Sidewalk Arts Festival is Saturday, Sept. 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the festival is free.

This year marks the third year the festival takes place on the downtown streets surrounding the Pavilion: Main and Dakota Avenues between 12th and 10th Streets and 11th Street from Main west to Minnesota Avenue. Over 230 fine art, folk art, craft and food booths are scheduled to take part.

The festival will feature the Children's Garden Studio, where kids can make and take arts and science projects, play games and more. Activities include Clay Pets, Crazy Hats, Rock and Bead Necklaces, Bird Seed Houses,Tom Twist Balloons, Kirby Science Discovery Center’s Bubble Island, Face Painting, and the Jumping Room and Inflatable Slide. There's also a free Chalk Zone street painting area. Tickets for these activities are $2 each or all activities for $10. Proceeds go to support education programs at the Visual Arts Center.

Admission to the Kirby Science Discovery Center is free for the day. Children must be accompanied by an adult and admission stickers must be obtained at the Pavilion box office.

The Home Federal Bank parking ramp will be converted into the food court with several food and beverage vendors and will also include the Home Federal Entertainment Stage, featuring free entertainment in the form of professional rope jumper Peter Nestler. Nestler, a seven-time world champion rope jumper, will perform at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and will offer a free workshop at 11:30 a.m. The first 100 kids attending the 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. performances will receive a free jump rope.

Additional free entertainment will be offered in the Nelson Amphitheater located at the corner of Main and 11th. The schedule is as follows.

9:00 a.m. - DAPA Chamber Ensemble
9:30 a.m. - Great Plains ZooMobile
10:00 a.m. - Kirby Science Discovery Center’s "Fun of Soda" demonstration
10:30 a.m. - Sound Cascade Chorus of Sweet Adelines Intl.
12:00 noon - Jackie Bird, Hoop Dancer and Singer
1:30 p.m. - Dakota Men's Ensemble
2:00 p.m.- Whispering Sands Middle-Eastern Dance Troupe
2:30 p.m.- Sioux Falls Girls' Chorale

Major sponsors of the Sidewalk Arts Festival include Home Federal Bank, Billion Automotive, and Waste Management. Media sponsors are KSFY TV and KELO FM. Additional sponsors include Pepsi, Spader’s RV Center, Wendell Chiropractic, Partyland, Citi and First Premier Bank.
