Jerauld County: Unique Attractions

PIERRE, S.D. – Jerauld County, in east central South Dakota, offers several unique opportunities for visitors to experience small town hospitality. Discover the inviting communities of Wessington Springs, Alpena, Lane and Crow Lake.

Jerauld County is located 45 minutes from the Big Bend Dam of the Missouri River, offering an abundance of fishing and recreational opportunities. Hunting is a popular pastime in Jerauld County with healthy populations of white-tail deer, pheasant, grouse and other wildlife.

Tour the popular Anne Hathaway Cottage and Shakespeare Garden in Wessington Springs. The Shakespeare Garden Society of Wessington Springs was established to restore, maintain and improve the Shakespeare Garden and Anne Hathaway Cottage, a project that began in 1927.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Anne Hathaway Cottage is the only thatched roof building in South Dakota. This attraction is the site of teas, tours, a Maypole Dance, plays, Christmas events and weddings.

The Opera House, another historical location in Wessington Springs, was built in 1905 and served as the center for community entertainment and education. In its first full year, the Opera House hosted 31 performances. The building has been home to several businesses throughout the years and was restored after being deeded to the Dunham Historical Society in the 1980s.
