PIERRE, S.D. – Seven partners have been named for the Governor’s Million Dollar Challenge. They are: River City Racin’, Chamberlain/Oacoma; A T-Rex Named Sue Traveling Exhibit, Faith; The Golf Club at Red Rock, Rapid City; Member for a Day, North Sioux City; I-90 Prairie Tour, Wall, Badlands, Murdo and 15 other rural towns along I-90; Thomas the Train event, 1880 Train/Black Hills Central Railroad; and Northern Route to the Black Hills.

“The Governor’s Million Dollar Challenge is meant to generate new business and new growth for the tourism industry,” said Richard Benda, Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Tourism and State Development. “The Office of Tourism’s promise is to support these new initiatives with matching funds.”

Participants in the Million Dollar Challenge submitted application forms to the Office of Tourism for approval. Members of the Governor’s Tourism Advisory Board then reviewed the proposals and, after careful consideration, recommended to approve these seven cooperative efforts. The proposals were approved with the understanding that partners will provide matching funds in a cooperative marketing program and follow specified guidelines. Additionally, each cooperative project has been assigned a Governor’s Tourism Board liaison to work with the organization, as well as a primary contact staff member from the Office of Tourism.

There are still funds available for the Governor’s Million Dollar Challenge. Applications will continue to be accepted until 100% of the funds are allocated. Potential partners may submit applications and proposals to the Office of Tourism at the following address:

“Governor Rounds has been very supportive of the Office of Tourism and the tourism industry, and welcomes any and all new proposals for this challenge,” said Secretary Benda. “With the help of these funds, we’ll be that much closer to achieving our 2010 goal of doubling visitor spending.”

The Governor’s Million Dollar Challenge program is a part of Goal 1 of the 2010 initiative to double visitor spending in South Dakota. The Office of Tourism serves under the direction of Richard Benda, Secretary of the Department of Tourism and State Development.
