Gregory County: A Recreational Paradise

PIERRE, S.D. – Get your fill of outdoor recreation in Gregory County. This southern region includes the communities of Gregory, Burke, Bonesteel, Dallas, Fairfax, Herrick, St. Charles, Dixon and Lucas.

Learn the history of the Fort Randall Military Post along a self-interpretive trail just across the Missouri River. Tour the remains of the fort buildings that provided military protection to pioneer settlements from 1856 until the fort was abandoned in 1892. The site highlights excavated foundations, the Fort Randall Post Cemetery and the Fort Randall Chapel. Hear the complete history of the fort at the Fort Randall Visitor Center.

Before leaving the area, schedule a tour of the Fort Randall Dam. Features include the dam embankment, power plant, spillway and outlet works. Stop at the visitor center for stunning views and exhibits.

With several recreation areas spanning the county, visitors are never short of outdoor entertainment. The Missouri River serves as the county’s eastern border, providing water enthusiasts wonderful fishing and recreation opportunities. Enjoy exceptional walleye fishing on Lake Francis Case.
