Office of Tourism Announces Great Events for 2007

PIERRE, S.D. – Four South Dakota events have been selected by the Office of Tourism for the 2007 Great Events campaign. The events are: Czech Days, June 14-16 in Tabor; the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo, July 19-22 in Mitchell; Wheels & Wings Weekend featuring Sizzlin’ Summer Nights, Aug. 25-26 in Aberdeen; and the Mickelson Trail Trek, Sept. 14-16 along the Mickelson Trail in the Black Hills. “The Great Events campaign is a marketing tool we use to promote the variety of unique events in South Dakota and increase visitation at those events throughout the state,” said Billie Jo Waara, director of the South Dakota Office of Tourism. “The 2007 Great Events represent the diversity of festivals that take place, and offer both in- and out-of-state visitors a unique South Dakota experience.” The 2007 Great Events were chosen based on visitor appeal, growth potential and length of the event. The selection process includes an application and proposal, submitted by event coordinators for consideration by the South Dakota Office of Tourism. The Office of Tourism provides assistance to event coordinators and supports promotional efforts for designated events in order to boost visitor spending and increase the economic impact in host communities. The Great Events campaign is one component of the 2010 Initiative, which includes doubling visitor spending to $1.2 billion by 2010.
