PIERRE, S.D. – A full field of 250 boats will take to the waters of Lake Sharpe near Pierre June 23-24 for Cabela’s National Walleye Championship. Each of the 250 two-angler teams earned their way into the event by qualifying through a Cabela's-sanctioned walleye tournament in 2005. The tournament runs in conjunction with Oahe Days and Arts Festival, which will be held in Steamboat Park. “This event will have national visibility which will spotlight the richness and diversity of the Pierre area for hunting, fishing and as a vacation destination,” said Maggie Sobieski, executive director of the Pierre Chamber of Commerce. “Anglers and their families are able to come and pre-fish in our area as early as they’d like to familiarize themselves with the dam to dam fishing area.” The Cabela’s line up of events includes Weigh-Ins and Awards Friday and Saturday at 4 p.m. There will be Dock Dog jumps open to local participants held throughout the weekend. In addition, there will be a Kid’s Casting Contest with Cabela’s providing rods and reels.
