PIERRE, S.D. – Four South Dakota events have been selected by the Office of Tourism for the 2006 Great Events campaign. The events are: Fish Days, June 2-4 in Lake Andes; L. Frank Baum Oz Festival, June 9-10 in Aberdeen; Black Hills Overdrive, June 9-18 in the Black Hills; and the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo, July 13-16 in Mitchell. “The Great Events campaign is a marketing tool we use to promote events and increase visitation at events across the state,” said Billie Jo Waara, director of the South Dakota Office of Tourism. “The 2006 Great Events demonstrate a distinct diversity of festivals and offer mass appeal to potential visitors.” The Great Events campaign was revamped for 2006 to feature four events based upon certain criteria including visitor appeal, growth potential and length of the event. The Office of Tourism provides assistance to event coordinators and supports promotional efforts for designated events in order to boost visitor spending and increase the economic impact in host communities. The Great Events campaign is one component of the 2010 Initiative, which includes doubling visitor spending to $1.2 billion by 2010.
