South Dakota’s diverse terrain, from rolling hills to sky-piercing granite peaks to lush mountain meadows and prairie marshes and lakes, is home to nearly 400 species of birds. Located directly in the middle of where the eastern and western North American bird regions meet, the diversity of bird species found in South Dakota is stunning. Our parks and natural areas showcase both rare and common birds from waterfowl and burrowing owls to endangered species like the bald eagle, peregrine falcon or whooping crane.  A great opportunity for any birding enthusiast.
