PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Tourism is making South Dakota’s Lewis and Clark Trail historic sites more accessible for today’s travelers with free self-guided vacation adventure maps that are available online at www.lewisandclarkcountry.org, and at many state and city visitor centers, attractions and parks.

A total of three self-guided Lewis and Clark Trail Circle Tour vacation maps have been developed for South Dakota that include historic Lewis and Clark Expedition sites, as well as National and State Parks along the Trail.

“The history of the Lewis and Clark Expedition represents an important chapter in our nation’s and state’s history. It is an exciting story of adventure, courage facing the unknown and cooperation with many Native American tribes who lived along the expedition’s route,” said Jim Hagen, Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Tourism. “The circle tours provide easy-to-follow route maps for fun and memorable week-long or weekend vacations in South Dakota.”

The South Dakota Department of Tourism has partnered with the National Park Service, the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation and the state tourism departments in North Dakota, Montana and Nebraska in the development of this program.

The South Dakota Department of Tourism is comprised of Tourism, the South Dakota Arts Council and the South Dakota State Historical Society. The Department is led by Secretary Jim Hagen.
