Little House Book Series

The area was featured in several of her Little House series books, including "By the Shores of Silver Lake," "The Long Winter," "Little Town on the Prairie," "These Happy Golden Years" and "The First Four Years".

The Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society Historic Homes

Located in the heart of De Smet, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society preserves a collection of over 2000 original artifacts and three historic structures where the Ingalls family lived and studied.  The Surveyors' House was the Ingalls' family's first home in "By the Shores of Silver Lake", The First School of De Smet was attended by Laura and her sister Carrie in "Little Town on the Prairie", and the Ingalls Home was built by Pa shortly after Laura was married.  Tours off all of these buildings are available year round and begin at the gift shop located 1 block east of the court house.

The Homestead

Visitors can spend an entire day visiting the many attractions devoted to Laura's time in South Dakota. These include the original Ingalls Homestead, the house that Pa Ingalls built, the original Surveyors' House from Laura's book "By the Shores of Silver Lake," Big Slough and Silver Lake. Visitors can camp, take covered wagon rides, attend an 1880's school session or try other pioneering activities.

 Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant

The Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant, held each July, tells a story of a different aspect of Laura's life each year. The pageant is held outdoors, one mile southeast of De Smet. The homestead is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day each summer.
