Beauty and the Beast, Jr. (Children's Theater)
“Be our guest” and step into the enchanted world of Disney's Beauty and the Beast Jr. This play marks the seventh season of The Matthew’s Peanut Butter & Jelly Players performing on stage. The performances are Friday and Saturday, June 27-28 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 29 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale now for $8 adults and $5 youth (18 and younger). They may be purchased online at www.matthewsopera.com or at The Matthews’ art gallery during business hours, Monday-Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, or by phone at 605-642-7973.
“We started in 2008 with 101 Dalmatians. Most of our children’s plays are junior versions of the original productions. That means the plays are kept to around an hour’s length and the content is skewed to pertain to the age of the actors. However, many of the famous original songs are in the play!” says director Ann Froelich. This stage version includes music by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Menken and Tim Rice.
The cast and crew are children, from grades 2 through high school. As soon as school ends on June 3, the participants attend rehearsals June 4 until show day, from 8:00 a.m. until noon in the opera house theater. They not only learn how to sing and act, they learn blocking, directing, set decoration, and stage management. “There is something for everyone. Not all kids want to be on stage, but they want to be part of the creative process,” adds Froelich.
