South Dakota Birding Festival
Birding enthusiasts will gather May 3-5, 2013 at Fort Randall, SD to catch site of hundreds of migrating bird species returning to South Dakota or heading to other parts of the country. There are unique birding opportunities in this region. The Fort Randall location in Central South Dakota includes the Missouri River, Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge and Karl Mundt National Wildlife Refuge, which are all major flyways for migrating birds. Birders will experience seeing a wide variety of bird species in a short period of time. During the 2012 festival, birders sighted 145 different species, including Clark’s Grebe, White-faced ibis, Peregrine Falcon, American Avocet, Least Tern, Bell’s Vireo, Golden-winged Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat, Lazuli Bunting and many more.
