It was near Shadehill where famed trapper Hugh Glass was mauled by a grizzly bear in 1823. Despite a broken leg and other life-threatening injuries, this dogged frontiersman managed to trek more than 200 miles, alone and on foot, to safety.
Today, Shadehill is popular for camping, boating and more at Shadehill State Recreation Area, the largest in the state park system, and the Llewellyn Johns State Recreation Area, with its unique, petrified wood gazebo.
