Lead, South Dakota is located a few miles from Historic Deadwood in the Black Hills. It’s home to one of the richest gold finds in American history. During the gold rush of 1876, two brothers stumbled upon gold near the present day town.
They later sold their claim to publishing powerhouse, William Randolph Hearst, who was able to dig deeper and find a gold vein that produced oar for 125 years. Visitors can still tour the Homestake Visitors Center and learn all about the gold rush and its impact on the Black Hills.
