Gettysburg, in the Great Lakes Region of South Dakota, is located near Lake Oahe and some of the best fishing waters in the state. The West Whitlock Recreation Area is located 18 miles west of town and offers camping, swimming and boat ramps.
Chinook Salmon thrive in this part of Lake Oahe, thanks in part to the Whitlock Bay Spawning Station which stocks about 250,000 young salmon every year. Visitors to Gettysburg can also learn about pioneer and frontier history at the Dakota Sunset Museum, home to the mysterious Medicine Rock.
