The community of Garretson is located near Split Rock Creek and is famous for its western folklore. Allegedly, the outlaw Jesse James and his horse jumped Devil’s Gulch after robbing a nearby bank in Minnesota.

Garretson is also home to Palisades State Park where visitors can climb 50-foot vertical cliffs of Sioux Quartzite that line the shores of Split Rock Creek. The Palisades are a favorite among campers and rock climbers.
