Castlewood, South Dakota, located in Hamlin County south of Watertown, is said to have gotten its name from two railroad employees. In 1882, the first Chicago and Northwestern train passed through the area. The engineer was a man named Castle and the conductor was named Wood.

Today, Castlewood offers visitors camping and water recreation at nearby Lake Poinsett, the second largest natural lake in the state.
