Bristol is located off U.S. Highway 12 in the north eastern part of South Dakota. Part of the Yellowstone Trail, Bristol was once a stop for covered wagons going west.

Today hunters and anglers come to Bristol for outdoor recreation. There are two national wildlife refuges and ten state recreation areas located within 70 miles of the town.
