Belle Fourche

Belle Fourche, South Dakota was named “beautiful fork” by early French explorers because of its location at the forks of Hay Creek, Redwater and Belle Fourche Rivers. Located in the northern Black Hills, visitors will find outdoor adventures, history and the geographic center of the nation.

The U.S. Department of Commerce, Environmental Science Services Administration and the National Coast & Geodetic Survey designated Belle Fourche as the center when both Alaska and Hawaii were admitted to the union. Visitors can see the Center of the Nation monument located at the Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center.
