Discover how Native Americans lived in south Dakota one thousand years ago! The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is the only archaeological site in South Dakota open to the public. Archaeologists have been excavating this site since the 1920s. Visitors can tour the Boehnen Memorial Museum, where there is a life-size reconstructed lodge house, bison skeleton and many artifacts from the dig site. the dig site is fully enclosed inside the Archeodome, where visitors can watch the archaeologists work in the dig site or in the laboratory from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend.
