The world's largest mammoth research facility located in Hot Springs, South Dakota. The site is a working paleontological site/museum that contains the largest concentration of Columbian and Woolly mammoths ever found in their primary context (where they died) in the world. The Mammoth Site was featured on Discovery Channel's "Raising the Mammoth" and "Land of the Mammoth". Smithsonian Magazine recently featured the Mammoth Site in an article "ALL-AMERICAN MONSTERS" detailing the history of mammoths. A new 12,000 square foot addition in 2001 includes 4,000 square feet of additional exhibit space and viewing laboratory where visitors can visit with staff and volunteers as they work on preserving the fossils removed from the sinkhole.
Visitors to the Mammoth Site can enjoy fun and educational programs. The Junior Paleontologist Excavation (ages 4-12) teaches children Paleontological excavation techniques, including identification of replica mammoth and giant short-faced bear fossils. Available daily (June 1 - August 15) for an additional $10, above the cost of admission. Visitors 13 and older can enjoy the Advanced Paleontological Excavation program. This advanced program teaches proper excavation techniques and bone identification, such as learning how to map and jacket a bone. This program costs an additional $20, above the cost of admission and is available daily June 1- July 31. Learn an ancient hunting technique with the Atlatl Throwing Program (ages 13 and older). Participants are taught the history, types, and techniques of the atlatl, and will practice throwing the atlatl. Available daily from June 1 - August 15 for an additional cost of $10, above the cost of admission. All programs have a limited availability and require an advanced reservation.
Open daily year round - CLOSED Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years day. Peak season open from 8am - 8pm. off season Monday-Saturday 9 - 3:30pm Sunday 11-3:30pm.
