Oahe Project

Oahe Dam is one of six main stem projects operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the upper Missouri River basin. Authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1944, the Corps began construction of Oahe Dam in 1948 and began generating hydroelectric power in 1962. President John F. Kennedy officially dedicated the dam and lake on August 17, 1962.
Lake Oahe is the 14th-largest man-made reservoir by volume in the world with a storage capacity of 23.5 million acre-feet.
Powerplant Tours
Tours are given daily Memorial Day through Labor Day. Tours start at the Visitor Center, with check in at 10:00 a.m, 1:00 p.m, and 4:00 p.m. Plan an hour and a half per tour, and bring a photo ID. Groups of 10 or more should call to schedule a tour.
